Modern Aesthetic First Floor Reconfiguration
Pittsburgh
the details:This first floor remodel of a classic 1930’s home in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh kept in mind the homeowners’ love of mid-century modern design. The kitchen featured rich walnut finishes, soapstone-look quartz with a honed finish, and pops of a hand selected teal paint to bring warmth and character. A key focus was space optimization, and a new walnut cased doorway was added from the dining room to the kitchen, dramatically improving flow and accessibility. Rather than adding a walk-in pantry, cabinetry was installed to match the rest of the kitchen, creating a seamless, open feel. The layout was further enhanced with refinished hardwood floors leading to a stacked-pattern tile floor, which worked harmoniously to unify the space. Unique light fixtures and the addition of large windows brought in an abundance of natural light, making the space feel open and airy. The remodel extended to the powder room, which featured playful, standout wallpaper that added personality and charm without overwhelming the space. Matte black finishes made the lighting, hardware, and walnut mirror pop against the vibrant wallpaper pattern.
Features & Challenges of the Project:Throughout the project, attention to architectural details was paramount, particularly in overcoming challenges posed by varying ceiling heights and hidden utilities. The integration of walnut paneling between the dining and living areas added an architectural focal point, tying the spaces together. This thoughtful approach to design not only modernized the home but also honored the homeowners’ vision and personal style, resulting in a cohesive and functional space that feels both stylish and welcoming.
